How does child support stop when the child reaches 18?
I have been paying child support through the Division of Child Support Enforcement in VA.
The child I am paying for will turn 18 soon, and I will no longer be obligated to pay child support, my question is this:
Will the support stop automatically? (currently deducted from my paycheck) Will I need to contact the Child Support people to let them know the child is now 18?
Any thoughts are appreciated.

I stops automatically. Unless the child goes to college, then you still have to pay.
Talk to the agency.
I have to say, the way you write “the child I am paying for” rather than “my child” is a bit disturbing and chilly, to say the least.
you need to go back to court !!!!!!!!
It doesn’t stop automatically; you need an order to make it stop. Contact the Attorney General, or whoever oversees it in your state.
It will NOT stop automatically unless you have it stopped.
You contact the Support Agency and inform them when the child turns 18 and considered emancipated therefore no longer eligible per your state & support decree for child support-they will send you the paper work you need to complete….
..however it may require going back to Family Court. Do not delay.
depends on the state but you need to go and let them know. the computer systems are just input information.
now if you own back pay you still need to pay that.
These people are so dumb.
Okay – how did the support even start in the first place?
Because there was an order from the decree. That same decree also states the stop date (s). However, how does the state know your case from a zillion other ones?
Contact them in writing that they have the correct date(s). You do not need to go back to court. It is already all there!
And it stops.
Depending on your state, it stops automatically OR you have to contact them to remind them, but mind you some states it DOES NOT stop at 18, it goes until college…depends on what your order says
That depends on the order of support. Not all child support is until the child is 18, some orders state the child is supported as long as they are in school. Since it comes out of your pay check you need to let your employer know that the child is now 18 and they will stop taking it as long as the court order indicates that 18 is the cut off. You need to be sure what the order says first.
Go to Dads House in Yahoo Groups. There’s a free manual there that will teach you all you need to know, and association with others involved in similar cases.
